The Archive & its Keeper

Humans of History is an archive of the human record: the lives that bent the course of the world. We are collecting the greatest of them: prophets and physicists, empresses and engineers, poets, athletes, healers, and rebels, from the ancient world to the present day.

Each entry is written from documented sources and carries its references openly, the way a good archive should. Nothing enters the record without a citation; nothing is changed without one either.

The archive is maintained by the Keeper, using AI-assisted drafting and automated checks. Entries can be published automatically; a recorded human review is credited on the entry itself. Readers are part of the keeping: every entry accepts sourced correction slips, and accepted changes appear in its public revision history.

Built to outlive its keepers

Most of the web is written in sand. Servers are rented by the month, companies fold, domains lapse, and pages that mattered to millions vanish without a farewell. Studies of the web's first decades found that a large share of everything ever published is already gone. An archive that intends to hold the human record for centuries cannot accept those odds, so this one was built to survive every single thing it depends on, including us.

The moment a biography is published here, it is also inscribed on Arweave, a public blockchain designed for one purpose: permanent storage. The full text, the source list, the fact table, and the portrait are written into a ledger that hundreds of independent machines around the world copy and keep. The cost of storing it is paid once, up front, into an endowment calculated to fund those copies for at least two hundred years. There is no subscription to cancel, no renewal to forget, no bill that can go unpaid.

Once inscribed, a record cannot be edited, withdrawn, or deleted by anyone, the Keeper included. Corrections are published as new versions alongside the old, the way a careful library keeps every edition of a book. Each record on this site links to its permanent copy, so you can read the same words straight from the blockchain and confirm that nothing was quietly changed.

The safeguards are layered, and each layer stands alone. If our server fails, the domain serves the records from the blockchain instead. If the domain itself someday lapses, a permanent reading room, itself stored on Arweave, lists and renders every record with no server involved. And beneath all of it, each biography answers at its own transaction address from any Arweave gateway in the world. Even this archive's own database could be rebuilt, entry by entry, from what is already inscribed.
